Introduction

Drawing from the college’s distinctive efforts in nurturing foreign language talent and the school’s experienced and highly sought-after second foreign language teaching and research team and funded by the National Science Council for Humanities and Social Sciences Research Library Acquisitions, the project seeks to complete the school’s library resources and publications of second language teaching and learning, specifically in the teaching of German and Spanish, in the hope of enriching the library’s collection of local and foreign teaching resources in quantity and quality. The ultimate goal of the project is to establish the school as the nation’s base of second language teaching research resources and to provide relevant services to professionals and students. The project is co-executed by teachers of the college’s Department of English, Department of German, Department of Spanish and Department of Foreign Language Instruction and library professionals.

The project seeks to acquire primarily local and foreign academic publications in second language teaching and learning. The lists of books to be acquired were finalized after researchers of the project reviewed the collections of second language teaching and learning (hereby referring to German and Spanish) theories and practice in the nation. The core collections of a number of renowned international research institutes, including the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the Bielefeld University, the Goethe Institut, the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the University of Cambridge served as benchmarks for the acquisitions while experts and professors were invited to review the lists.

The acquisitions in the first year of the project focused on two dimensions: second language teaching and learning theories and methodologies and the practice of second language teaching. The former included German, Spanish and English literature of second language acquisition, curriculum design, teaching strategies, etc. The latter included contemporary German and Spanish literature published from 1945 onward.

The acquisitions in the second year of the project will be centered on building a collection of second language teaching and learning research, specifically in the field of testing and evaluation. German and Spanish teaching materials in cultural studies, including materials related to cinematology, culture and inter-cultural communication, will also be included in the acquisitions. The acquisitions in the third year will focus on publications related to alternative second language teaching and learning theories and methodologies while classic German and Spanish teaching materials and research reports in terms of social sciences, political science and business will also be part of the acquisitions.
